Waterproof outdoor fabrics often use a coating or lamination layer to improve protection against rain, moisture, and wind. Two common options are PU coated fabric and TPU laminated fabric. Both can be used for outdoor gear, but they are not the same.
PU coating is applied directly to the fabric surface. It offers good waterproof performance, flexible hand feel, and practical cost control. TPU lamination uses a thermoplastic polyurethane film bonded to fabric, which can provide higher durability, elasticity, and barrier consistency for demanding applications.
If the target product is a cost-sensitive backpack, storage cover, or promotional outdoor item, PU coating may be the best starting point. If the product requires high flex resistance, better long-term durability, or a premium waterproof breathable layer, TPU lamination may be more suitable. KIGI Textile can supply and develop coated and laminated fabrics based on fabric type, weight, width, waterproof target, color, and end use.
