Martindale abrasion test results are often requested when sourcing outdoor fabrics, workwear textiles, bags, upholstery and technical woven materials. However, a higher Martindale cycle number does not automatically mean that one fabric is better for every application.
To make a useful comparison, buyers need to understand which Martindale result is being reported, which surface is being tested and whether the fabric is uncoated, coated or laminated.
The Martindale method evaluates how a textile surface responds to repeated rubbing under controlled conditions. It is widely used to assess abrasion resistance in woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, nonwovens and many technical textiles.
Depending on the selected method, the reported result may show the number of cycles until specimen breakdown, the loss in mass, or a change in appearance. These are different measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Martindale figures are useful for comparing fabrics, but they are not a universal product-life guarantee. A high result can be meaningful only when the same test method, end point, specimen preparation and relevant test conditions are used.
For an uncoated textile surface, the ISO 12947 series is commonly used. However, if the abrasion performance of a PU-coated, TPU-laminated or other coated surface needs to be evaluated, the coated-surface test method should be specified separately.
ISO 12947-2 does not apply to the coated surface of coated or laminated fabrics. For coated-surface abrasion, buyers can discuss ISO 5470-2, which covers wet and dry abrasion resistance of coated fabric surfaces using a Martindale abrader.

Fiber selection is important, but it does not determine Martindale performance by itself. A fabric’s abrasion resistance can change significantly depending on yarn denier, weave density, yarn type, fabric weight, surface finish, coating, lamination and stretch construction.
For example, nylon is often selected for abrasion-focused outdoor and workwear applications, while polyester can provide a cost-efficient and stable construction for many technical uses. The final selection should be based on tested finished fabric, not only on the fiber name.
There is no single “good” Martindale result for every fabric. The suitable requirement depends on the intended use, the tested surface, the selected ISO method and the performance level agreed for the product.
Not automatically. Abrasion resistance and pilling are different properties. ISO 12945-2 uses a modified Martindale method to assess pilling, fuzzing and matting.
ISO 12947-2 is not intended for evaluating the abrasion behavior of a coated surface. For coated-surface abrasion, discuss ISO 5470-2 or another method suitable for the requested surface and end use.
No single test can predict complete product life. Martindale data is one useful control point, but garment durability also depends on seams, pattern design, reinforcements, washing, environmental exposure and real wearing conditions.
