What is PLA?

What is PLA?
Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a bioplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane. It is produced by converting the extracted glucose from these plant materials into lactic acid, which is then refined and undergoes polymerization reactions to form PLA fibers. These fibers are further processed through spinning and weaving to create textile products. Chemically, PLA exhibits biodegradability and biocyclic characteristics. Once discarded, PLA undergoes gradual decomposition through microbial action, releasing harmless substances such as water and carbon dioxide, ultimately being reintegrated into the natural cycle. This process embodies genuine green environmentalism and sustainable development through recycling.

PLA Material - What is polylactic acid made from?
The materials used in the production of PLA are abundant, including natural biomass sources containing starch, cellulose, and hemicellulose, all of which can be polymerized to produce polylactic acid.
In addition to these, there are several other natural resources that can be utilized for PLA production. These include:

Sucrose: Sucrose is a common natural carbohydrate that can be processed through fermentation and conversion processes to produce lactic acid, which is then used in the production of polylactic acid (PLA).
Bagasse: Bagasse is the fibrous residue left after extracting sugar from sugarcane and can be utilized as a raw material for producing polylactic acid.
Woody cellulose: Woody cellulose, a polysaccharide found in wood with high content, can be prepared into lactic acid through extraction and conversion processes, suitable for PLA production.
Corn cobs: Corn cobs are the residual parts of corn ears, rich in cellulose and starch, making them one of the raw materials for PLA production.
Rice straw: Rice straw is the leftover part of rice crops, containing a large amount of cellulose, which can be used as one of the raw materials for producing polylactic acid.

Is polylactic acid biodegradable?How does polylactic acid degrade?

Yes,polylactic acid (PLA) is biodegradable. PLA is derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane, making it a bio-based polymer. When disposed of in suitable environments such as industrial composting facilities or aerobic composting systems, PLA undergoes microbial degradation, breaking down into water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter over time.

The degradation process involves several steps:
  • Hydrolysis: PLA chains are broken down into smaller fragments through hydrolysis, a chemical reaction in which water molecules break the ester bonds between the lactic acid monomers. This initial step results in the formation of lactic acid oligomers or monomers.
 
  • Microbial Attack: Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and enzymes naturally present in the environment further break down the lactic acid oligomers or monomers into simpler compounds like carbon dioxide, water, and organic acids. These microorganisms metabolize PLA as a carbon source, facilitating its degradation.
 
  • Mineralization: Eventually, the degraded PLA fragments are fully mineralized into harmless substances like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass, completing the degradation process. The mineralized remnants can integrate back into the natural carbon cycle, contributing to soil fertility.

According to tests, it has been found that PLA fibers degrade over 50% after 45 days of landfilling, and after 180 days, 95% degradation occurs, making it undoubtedly an environmentally friendly material.

Physical Properties of Polylactic Acid (PLA)
 
  • Polylactic Acid (PLA) Density
The density of Polylactic Acid (PLA) typically ranges from 1.24 g/cm³ to 1.27 g/cm³, whereas polyester fiber has a density of 1.38 g/cm³. This density difference gives Polylactic Acid (PLA) unique advantages in certain aspects. Due to its lower density, products made from Polylactic Acid (PLA) are generally lighter and more suitable for applications requiring lightweight designs, such as textiles, packaging materials, and 3D printed products.
 
  • PLA Young's Modulus
The Young's modulus of Polylactic Acid (PLA) falls between that of polyester and nylon, resulting in a texture that is firmer than nylon but much softer than polyester.
 
  • PLA refractive index
PLA has a relatively low refractive index of only 1.4%, meaning that light passing through PLA experiences minimal refraction and deviation. Consequently, PLA fabrics exhibit a soft, silky luster reminiscent of silk, imparting a luxurious and noble feel.
 
  • PLA Tensile Strength
Tensile Strength of PLA (Polylactic Acid) typically falls between 50 MPa and 70 MPa. Tensile strength refers to the material's resistance to failure under tensile loading and is one of the key indicators for measuring strength and durability. For materials like PLA, factors such as production processes, material purity, and crystallinity can influence its tensile strength.
